Steve Gaskin here, I grew up on a farm in North Arkansas and was interested in pigeons and just about everything else with feathers at a very young age, I had my first pair at about six. I didn't have jacobins till my late teens and since their were no shows in my area and no way to get to where any were they were just my own little hobby. I got back into them again in the 80's but about the time I might have been making serious progress, life and work got in the way so I gave them up again in 91'.September 2001, I was setting in my living room signing a contract to have my 1920's Dallas cottage gutted and remodeled when we saw on TV the plane fly into the trade towers in New York. I looked back up from the TV at my contractor and said "well I guess I will sign this but who knows what is going to happen".
That afternoon I started cleaning out a garden house on the property and an idea came into my head, what a nice little pigeon loft this would make. Within a week I was doing research and making calls and by winter I had a few jacobins shipped in from a few top breeders including a good pair of whites from John Hundrup. Soon I was up in Oklahoma visiting Ron Davis and Pat Avery and this was a smart move because they were kind enough to let me go into their young bird pens and pick what I wanted. I could write a small book on the adventures that came but will save that for later.
Jacobins are a difficult breed to breed to a high show quality standard, but that said they are not diffi- cult to breed . They can and will raise their own young especially if you start with young birds and let them learn to do it. It is a breed you need mentoring in and I have been very lucky to have some serious mentoring from the likes of Ron Davis, Pat Avery, Clint Robertson, Bill Sacher, DrewLobenstien and many others.
My biggest education has been at the shows and have had the privilege of seeing many Master breeders judge. It is something you must do if you want to be successful. I strive to have clean, healthy, fertile, pro- ductive, show quality jacobins. Nothing else has a reason to be here. I love to talk about jacobins, and anyone is welcome to email me anytime.
New friend and new person to the Jacobin hobby Larry Lopez offered to design this site for me and am cer- tainly grateful. It is just simple like me, we will learn more about it as we go along and add more news and information. I highly recommend the yahoo jacobin group created by Claus Jensen of Denmark for infor- mation and shared ideas from around the world and Clint Robertson's web site is world class. His articles are clear and extremely helpful in the many aspects of breeding jacobins. All of the old APJ specials are full of information as well as the 99 Pigeon Debut special, and the 2007 Purebred Pigeon Breed of Issue, Janurary-Feburary issue. More and more information and articles are being published in the Purebred Pigeon Magazine. This most beautiful full color pigeon magazine ever published and worth your subscription.
All the Jacobin clubs are full of great people and I recommend you join one. I am publicity director for the American Jacobin Club and that job didn't really come with a description but I hope this site will help me do that job better as well. Hope you enjoy my site. I don't do alot of posing of the birds, hope- fully just give you the real flavor as if I was showing them to you in the loft.
